How I Started
My journey into soap-making began when my youngest child developed allergies to ingredients and fragrances in commercial soaps. To address his severe reactions (which medications only exacerbated), I removed all products containing fragrance and sodium lauryl sulfate from our home, which significantly improved his condition. However, managing a bustling farm with three kids, pets, and livestock required effective cleaning solutions.
I initially found success with handmade soaps from local artisans, but when our soapmaker changed her olive oil castile recipe to include palm, coconut, and canola oils, my family experienced major reactions again. Rather than chancing more allergic reactions, I decided to take control of the situation by creating my own soap and laundry detergent. This choice not only addressed our specific needs but also sparked the beginning of my soap business.
My Type of Soap
I specialize in making ONLY olive oil castile soap. I do not use coconut, palm, sunflower, soy, canola, or peanut oil. All of my soap recipes are crafted with 100% olive oil. After the soap has been thoroughly cooked and saponified, I add castor oil, vitamin E oil, essential and fragrance oils, ensuring they are never exposed to active lye or the heat of the cooking process.
When making soap with olive oil, the process can be somewhat unpredictable during mixing and saponification. Olive oil is known for being challenging; it tends to behave erratically and can be prone to failure. Although it is a soft oil, it yields a hard finish in the soap. Additionally, it may take a considerable amount of time for the olive oil and lye solution to reach trace (the point at which it thickens).
Olive oil produces a very mild soap that is suitable for all skin types, including those with allergies or sensitivities. This type of soap is often referred to as “baby soap” because it gently cleanses delicate skin without stripping it of moisture.
The soap creates a low, lotion-like, creamy lather that is soothing and moisturizing. It rinses away cleanly, leaving no residue. Your skin will feel soft and clean, eliminating the need for an added moisturizer.
