Where Does Clove Come From?
Syzygium aromaticum comes from the Maluku (Spice) Islands of Indonesia and grows as a bushy evergreen tree in humid tropical areas. It can grow 8 to 20 meters tall and produces clusters of aromatic, reddish flower buds.

These buds are picked before they open, dried, and then used whole as a spice or distilled to get essential oil. Today, cloves are grown in many tropical places like Indonesia, Madagascar, Zanzibar (Tanzania), Sri Lanka, and parts of India and Brazil, where the climate suits the tree’s long growing cycle (Plants of the World, 2025).
Types of Clove and Chemotypes
Botanically, clove is one species; however, growers and researchers identify varieties (cultivars) and chemotypes that differ in bud size, aroma, and oil yield. These differences stem from geography and the way the plants are grown.
This includes regional varieties traditionally grown in Indonesia and other tropical areas. Changes in essential oil makeup—especially amounts of eugenol, eugenyl acetate, and β-caryophyllene—create slightly different profiles that are useful in cooking, medicine, and cosmetics (HerbaZest).
