Rosemary essential oil has always been one of my favorite ingredients to work with when making soap. Distilled from the aromatic leaves of the rosemary plant (Salvia rosmarinus), this essential oil carries a fresh, herbaceous scent that feels both invigorating and grounding.


When I first began experimenting with it in my soap recipes, I was drawn not only to its clean, uplifting fragrance but also to its long history of traditional use for skin and scalp care.
In soapmaking, rosemary essential oil blends beautifully with other herbal and woody oils, adding a bright, natural aroma that holds well through the curing process. Over time, it became a staple in my soap shop, especially in formulas designed for everyday cleansing and for soaps intended for hair or scalp care.
How Many Kinds of Rosemary Are There?
Botanically speaking, there is one main species of rosemary: Salvia rosmarinus (formerly Rosmarinus officinalis). However, within this single species, there are many cultivated varieties, known as cultivars.
These have been selectively bred over centuries to enhance traits such as aroma, growth habit, climate tolerance, and essential oil production.
Some rosemary plants grow tall and upright, while others trail gently along the ground. Leaf size, color, flower shade, scent intensity, and oil yield can all vary widely.
Popular cultivars include Tuscan Blue, Arp, Blue Spires, Miss Jessopp’s Upright, Gorizia, and Prostratus (a creeping variety). This diversity allows rosemary to thrive in climates ranging from cool northern gardens to hot Mediterranean hillsides.
From a therapeutic and aromatic standpoint, rosemary is also classified by chemotypes, which describe the plant’s dominant chemical composition. Scientists recognize six major rosemary chemotypes, each offering different benefits (González-Minero FJ, Bravo-Díaz L, Ayala-Gómez A.2020):
- 1,8-cineole – known for mental clarity, focus, and respiratory support
- Camphor – valued for muscle relief, circulation, and joint comfort

Modern agricultural research shows that growing conditions significantly influence rosemary’s essential oil yield and chemical composition, affecting both aroma and therapeutic strength (Duce et al., 2024).
How Is Rosemary Essential Oil Made?
Rosemary essential oil is produced using steam distillation, a gentle method that preserves the plant’s delicate aromatic compounds.
Fresh or partially dried rosemary leaves and flowering tops are placed in a distillation chamber. As steam passes through the plant material, it releases the volatile oils. The steam is then cooled, allowing the oil to separate naturally from the water.
High-quality rosemary essential oil contains a complex blend of bioactive compounds, including 1,8-cineole, camphor, borneol, α-terpineol, and caryophyllene. These compounds work together to produce rosemary’s wide-ranging therapeutic benefits.

Rosemary essential oil is used frequently in hair care, with some good results. Research suggests it may stimulate scalp circulation, reduce inflammation, and support healthy hair follicles.
Regular, diluted use may improve hair thickness, reduce shedding, and promote healthier scalp conditions. Rosemary essential oil does work, but much more slowly than the commercial products it is commonly compared to.
Scientific studies and lab research suggest rosemary essential oil could:
- Stimulate circulation in the scalp → improved delivery of nutrients to hair follicles
- Reduce DHT activity → Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is linked to androgenetic alopecia
- Promote the anagen (growth) phase in hair follicles (seen in mice studies)
- Act as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant → reduces scalp irritation that can harm hair growth.
So, there is some scientific support to suggest human hair growth using rosemary essential oil; however, the effects are modest and take months to appear. Much of the research available at this time is driven by cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies with vested interests in the research.

Rosemary oil is rich in antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals, protecting skin from environmental damage and premature aging.

- Dilute before use: Essential oils are typically diluted in a carrier oil such as jojoba, almond, or coconut oil. Standard dilution is 1–2% for adults (roughly 6–12 drops per 1 oz / 30 mL of carrier oil).
- Patch test first: Apply a small amount of diluted oil to a small area of skin and wait 24 hours to check for a reaction.
- Avoid sensitive areas: Do not apply near eyes, mucous membranes, or broken skin.
- Special populations: Pregnant or nursing individuals, children under 6, and people with certain medical conditions should use caution or avoid use.
